Eating for a healthy heart
  1. Reduce refined carbohydrates (processed foods, white bread, white pasta, bakery goods).
     
  2. Eat small meals regularly.
     
  3. Avoid over-eating.
     
  4. Reduce the amount of saturated fats you consume (fats on meat, high fat dairy products, fried foods).
     
  5. Reduce all fried foods.
     
  6. Include more 'good' fats in your diet. This includes all monounsaturated and polyunsaturated oils, found in vegetable oils, nuts and seeds.
     
  7. Try to eat fish 3-5 times per week. The best fish to eat are salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel.
     
  8. Consume fruit and vegetables daily. These contain antioxidants and nutrients which are vital to the heart of your heart.
     
  9. Choose wholemeal grain products (ie. pasta, bread, flour).
     
  10. Drink 2-3litres of filtered water per day.
     
  11. Avoid caffeine, soft drinks, and foods high in refined sugars.
     
  12. Reduce alcohol consumption.
     
  13. If overweight, aim to reduce your weight.
     
  14. If you smoke, it is best to give up. However, cutting back is also a good start.
     
  15. Avoid or effectively deal with stress.
     
  16. Exercise.
     
  17. Establish good sleeping patterns.
