Vaccination information
Many of you may not be aware of the Australian Vaccination Network based in Bangalow NSW. This non-profit organisation has been operating since 1994 to educate people regarding vaccinations. It is a pro-choice and pro-information organisation that supports a parent's right to choose whether they vaccinate or not. Last year the network was considering closing its doors due to lack of funding. However, members got behind them and have managed to help them stay afloat. If you would like to find out more about the network and what they do, or if you would like to keep up with the latest news on vaccinations visit the website www.avn.org.au. They also have a great bookstore which you can buy from, and a magazine - Informed Voice which you can subscribe to.

You may remember back in 2000 there was a story on 60 minutes regarding the possible link between the MMR vaccine and autism. Andrew Wakefield a gastroenterologist found evidence of the measles virus in the gut of autistic children who parents believed were healthy prior to being given the MMR vaccine. In today's vaccination news it seems that this enquiry is set to be re-opened with a recent study, led by Arthur Krigsman, of New York University School of Medicine, involving 275 children. Serious intestinal inflammations were found in some of the autistic children and biopsies of gut tissue were performed on 82 of them. Of these, 70 are said to have shown evidence of the measles virus, which so far has been confirmed in 14 cases by more stringent DNA tests.

If vaccinations affect you, I encourage you to research the topic more thoroughly. A good starting point is the AVN website.

Honey and onion syrup
Chop one onion and put into a bowl. Cover with honey (manuka is great for it's anti-bacterial properties, but any raw honey is OK). Leave to steep for a few hours. Utilise the syrup as a cough and cold remedy. The addition of chopped garlic aids the process. Great for kids with runny noses and coughs.
