Personal case study
I want to share with you my recent experience of coming down with the flu. It's true I don't get sick very often, but a month ago I suddenly came down with the flu. I felt it coming on Thursday night and by Friday I could hardly get out of bed. I had the muscle fatigue, head congestion, thumping headache and general feeling of wanting to curl up on the lounge and sleep. I decided that I would try to increase my temperature and burn the bad bugs away. So I made a lovely concoction of lemon juice, grated ginger, garlic, cinnamon, chilli, cloves and water. I boiled this on the stove and served it with honey. I must have drank 2 litres of this through the day, along with small frequent doses of Vitamin A,C,E powder.

By the night time I felt much better. I continued the same regime on Saturday. By Sunday I was almost back to normal.

I want to demonstrate 2 points - the quicker you deal with health problems the faster you can overcome them. This is particularly important in today's society where many people can't afford to have a week sick due to work commitments and looking after children. The second is that simple things often work very well. Home remedies do still have a place in treatment regimes. If you feel like you are coming down with something take immediate action. Call me and I can give you some advice. Although many things can resolve themselves, a helping hand is sometimes needed to hasten the process.

Coconut
Coconut and its by-products (coconut oil, coconut milk) have received bad press over the years due to its saturated fat content. It has been placed in the same category as animal fats in contributing to cardiovascular disease and weight gain. However, recent studies on the type of fats in coconut have highlighted their health benefits.

Approximately 50% of the fatty acids in coconut are in a medium-chain form called lauric acid, which the body then converts to monolaurin which has been shown to kill viruses, bacteria, yeasts and parasites. Monolaurin also strengthens the immune system, promotes brain and nervous system development, protects against cancers and heart disease and assists the uptake of omega 3 fatty acids. Coconut oil increases the levels of beneficial HDL cholesterol. The medium chain fatty acids are easily broken down and absorbed by the body, and preferentially used as an energy source, similar to the way the body burns carbohydrates. The oils in coconut oil stimulate metabolism and thermogenesis (the burning of calories to create energy). A report published in 2000 has indicated that you can burn off coconut oil three times faster than other fats.

Coconut oil is in fact the best oil to cook with, because it remains the most stable and will not turn toxic under high heat. It is important that the coconut products have not been hydrogenated first, as this is where the problem lies.

Not all fats are bad fats. Why not reconsider the use of coconut oil and milk throughout your cooking?

A word on supplements
I believe that if you are going to pay money for a supplement - vitamin, mineral or herb - it is important to know the quality of what you are taking. Many supplements that are available over the counter, in supermarkets or health food stores can be a waste of money. Supplements vary due to the quality of ingredients used, the amount of ingredients, and the form that they are in.

Before you buy a supplement next time, get some advice. I would rather you call or email me and ask about a particular supplement before you buy it. I do prescribe practitioner-only supplements because I believe that they are superior due to the quality of ingredients, reputations of the supplier and their effectiveness. However, I can also give you advice on other brands which still may be OK to use.

Thank you

Bach flower of the month - HONEYSUCKLE 'Nostalgia and homesickness' Bach flower of the month - HONEYSUCKLE 'Nostalgia and homesickness' Bach flower of the month - HONEYSUCKLE 'Nostalgia and homesickness'
Honeysuckle is a useful remedy for people who tend to live in the past, who constantly look back to happier days. A result of this is that they tend to lose focus on what is happening in the present, and feel that life can never live up to what it used to be.

Honeysuckle as a Bach remedy could help people who cannot seem to let go of past loves, thoughts and patterns. It can assist the path of moving forward and being able to experience and love what is happening now. It helps to deal with feelings of homesickness, or pining for past loves.
